Meet The HD DEVO Coaches!

  • Tom Roan

I’m married to Carolyn, a retired engineer.  She’s way smarter, better looking and stronger.  We have three sons and a daughter.  The two oldest are grown professionals and the two youngest are in college.

I’m 62 and a retired environmental lawyer.  I practiced in Wyoming and Colorado.  I now work part-time as a policy advisor for the state health department, environmental programs.  I practiced in all environmental media, but spent the most time in air quality.

I started mountain biking around the Happy Jack recreation area in Wyoming, after someone stole my road bike.  That remains my favorite place to ride.  I started road biking again after I moved to Colorado,  I love riding trails and roads, dirt or paved.

We bought a home near Dolores in 2021 following many years of exploring the Rocky Mountain region, looking for our favorite retirement spot.  Good skiing and mountain biking- trails and culture, as well as ready access to the prettiest desert and mountains in the region settled it for us.

I have an insatiable sweet tooth, and I am particularly fond of Belgian beers, Colorado malt whiskies and good scotch.

  • Josh Maule

Originally from Phoenix, AZ but has now lived in Dolores for the last 1/2 decade and has no plans on leaving this heaven on earth.

Head Coach with High Desert Devo. I work as a ski, snowboard, and mountain bike instructor at the Telluride Ski Resort and carry a Children’s Specialist 1 certification through PSIA/AASI. I’m also working on my Mountain Bike level 1 Cert through PIMBA. I also work as a live even announcer, handling microphone duties at events like the Iron Horse Classic, Salt Lake City Marathon, and The Cactus Cup as well as local events like the 12 Hours of Mesa Verde and Dolores River Fest.

As someone who loves teaching, is a Father of 2, and, who loves outdoor sports, getting to coach kids on bikes in the local community is not only rewarding but a ton of fun. I started mountain biking in the early 90’s and continue to progress in my riding every year. I love connecting with my fellow Montezuma county residents as well as visitors to this special piece of the southwest. I also enjoy river rafting and spending time with my kids going on adventures. If you catch me out and about, don’t hesitate to say hello and strike up a conversation!

  • Cy R.

    From Venice, FL (Go Gators!)

Currently providing my Pharmacy packed 35+ professional year career with the Ute Mountain Ute tribe in Towaoc, CO.  Some of my key character rides include the 24 Hours of Moab, Gallup’s Dusk till Dawn, and the Iron Horse Citizen’s tour. Spinning provides a mental escape that connects the mind, body and soul.  My goal is to inspire others to ride on!

  • Oliver Skelly

Oliver is a recent transplant to the High Desert, moving here for a judicial clerskhip following his graduation from law school. Oliver got his start riding bikes in the streets of Houston, TX, but it was moving to Colorado that turned him into a true mountain biker.  He’s spent years exploring trails across the Rocky Mountain West, even bikepacking the entire Colorado Trail—complaining emphatically the whole way. His favorite ride? Whichever trail he’s on right now!

  • Dan Hancock

I have lived in Southwest Colorado since 2005, and am originally from Littleton, Co.

I am a School Social Worker and therapist, but my favorite job of all is being a DEVO coach. I enjoy adventure of all sorts, which has led me to travel to 29 countries, and other "accomplishments" like living in a snow cave and a tipi. I have 2 step-daughters who keep me on my toes, and I love coaching them and watching them grow.'

  • Emma Savely

My main gig is being a Program Director with Stewards Individual Placements, a program of Conservation Legacy, where I oversee programming that supports the facilitation of hundreds of national young adult internships focused on environmental stewardship and research with agencies such as the National Park Service. My side hustles include coaching with High Desert DEVO for the last 5 years, market gardening and beekeeping. You can usually find me on Thursdays at the Mancos Farmers Market wielding our honey (Hideaway Honey to be exact!). I am originally from Western North Carolina, though I've lived in this region for over 13 years and love to spend my "extra" time birding, identifying plants, adventuring, and crafting.

  • Maddy Green

    Coach

I am super-duper excited to join High Desert Devo! My name is Madeline Green but I'm usually fonder of the nicknames Mad or Maddy. I live in Cortez, but I go to school in Mancos, so I usually feel a bit more at home there. My absolute favorite things about riding bikes is being able to do cardio without shin splints, maybe possibly do a wheelie in the future, and having unexpected drops/ramps in a trail. Mostly, I just love being outside! I went to Ireland this summer and explored Dublin, Galway, and Kilkenny!
